Private boat or joined tour

When a private boat trip from Koh Lanta makes sense

A private boat trip from Koh Lanta is worth it compared with a shared tour when your group is large enough to share the boat price, or when timing, pace and the choice of stops matter more than cost. For a couple on a classic island route, a joined tour is usually better value. National park fees are per person either way.

Most island days from Koh Lanta can be done two ways: on a joined tour, sharing a boat and a fixed programme with other travellers, or on a private boat that carries only your group. The islands are the same. What changes is who sets the clock, how the cost is split and, if you choose a longtail, how far you can sensibly go. This guide helps you decide before you ask anyone for a quote.

Private boat trip or shared tour from Koh Lanta at a glance

A shared tour wins on price for one or two people and does the planning for you. A private boat wins on control. The table sets out the trade.

How it is priced Per boat Per person
Route and stops Agreed with you, within conditions Fixed programme
Time at each stop Flexible Set by the schedule

What is included (lunch, snorkel gear, water, transfers) varies on both formats, so compare like with like. Our Koh Lanta boat tours page shows the routes offered both ways.

Is a private boat trip worth it compared with a shared tour?

It is worth it when your group is close to the break-even size, or when flexibility is the reason you are going. The cost logic is simple. A joined tour charges each person; a private boat charges for the boat. So divide the boat price by the joined price per person. Say a private boat costs about the same as six joined seats. A group of six then pays roughly the same either way and a group of eight pays less each. A couple pays three times as much per head.

Then adjust for what is not the same. A joined tour may include lunch, snorkel gear or a pier transfer that a private quote lists separately, or the other way round. National park fees are charged per person whichever boat you use, so they do not change the comparison. Ask whether they are inside the price.

Beyond the money, a private boat earns its cost in these situations:

  • Young children: you can keep crossings short, stop for naps and turn back early.
  • Older travellers or limited mobility: more time to board and land, no one waiting.
  • Seasickness: a shorter route, a calmer start time and the option to cut the day short.
  • Photography: you choose the light, and you can stay at a stop after the tour boats leave.
  • Tide-dependent stops: the Emerald Cave on Koh Mook depends on the tide and sea state, so timing helps. Our Emerald Cave guide explains why.
  • Mixed interests: some want to fish, others to snorkel.

A joined tour is the better choice if you are travelling alone or as a couple, want everything arranged, or are happy with the classic routes compared in our Koh Rok, 4 Islands or Phi Phi guide.

Private longtail or private speedboat for the day

Choose the boat around the route, not the other way round. A longtail is a wooden hull driven by a car-type engine on a long propeller shaft that the driver swings to steer. It is lower, slower and more traditional. A speedboat covers distance faster, which matters most for offshore islands.

Private longtail Private speedboat
Speed Slower; Koh Rok about 2 hr Faster; Koh Rok about 1 hr
Ride in a chop Low, with spray Quicker, but can slam
Engine noise Loud, close to you Varies with the boat
Shade Often a canopy; ask Often a canopy; ask
Suits Nearby islands, coast, sunset, fishing Koh Rok, Koh Haa, longer days

Times from Thai National Parks; other rows are general, so check the actual boat.

Can a longtail reach Koh Rok in a day?

Sellers disagree, and both sides can be right on different days. Thai National Parks gives about 2 hours each way by longtail and does not recommend it. Four things decide it:

  1. Where you leave from. Thai National Parks puts Koh Rok about 26 km south of Koh Lanta Yai, which fits a start from the southern end. Using OpenStreetMap coordinates, it is about 28 km in a straight line from Laem Tanod at the southern tip but about 48 km from Saladan pier in the north. At the pace implied by a 2 hour, 26 km crossing, a start in the north could mean more than 3.5 hours each way.
  2. Sea state. The run is open water. On 18 September 2026 the Thai Meteorological Department told small boats in the Andaman Sea to stay ashore for three days.
  3. The boat. Hull size, engine and load all change speed and comfort.
  4. Park rules. Koh Rok is in Mu Ko Lanta National Park. For 2026 it was scheduled closed from 1 June to 30 September, and the offshore zone fee is 400 THB per foreign adult.

If the longtail feel matters more than reaching Koh Rok, nearer routes such as the 4 Islands make a fuller day. For Koh Rok itself, see our Koh Rok and Koh Haa tour.

Fishing, snorkelling and a Koh Lanta sunset boat trip

A private boat is the usual way to combine activities, with one limit. Section 19 of the National Park Act 2019 bans taking wild animals and bringing tools for catching animals into a national park unless officials permit it. The best snorkelling sites lie inside parks, so fishing and snorkelling may happen in different places on the same day. Our article on what a fishing trip from Koh Lanta involves goes into the detail. Leave sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4MBC or butylparaben at home; a 2021 park notification bans them in marine national parks.

Sunset trips suit a longtail well because the distances are short. Koh Lanta’s west coast faces the open Andaman Sea. Calculated sunset times for the island (Sunrise-Sunset.org) are:

  • mid-November about 18:03
  • mid-December about 18:11
  • mid-January about 18:26
  • mid-February to mid-March about 18:36
  • mid-April about 18:34

Civil twilight adds about 20 minutes, so you come back in the dusk. Ask where you board, where you land and what time you return.

Questions to ask before booking a private boat

Whoever you book with, these answers tell you what you are paying for:

  • Route: which islands, in what order, and where the boat leaves from.
  • Time on the water: total hours, and how long each crossing takes.
  • The boat: longtail or speedboat, size and how many it seats comfortably.
  • What is provided: snorkel gear, fishing gear, drinking water, lunch.
  • Life jackets: enough for everyone, including child sizes.
  • Shade and toilet: is there a canopy, and is there a toilet on board.
  • Weather policy: who decides on the day, and whether you rebook or are refunded.
  • Fees: which park fees apply, and whether they are in the price.
  • Getting there: how you reach the boarding point.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is a private boat trip from Koh Lanta worth the extra cost?

It depends mostly on group size. A private boat is priced per boat and a joined tour per person, so the more of you there are, the smaller the gap per head. It is also worth it when you need to set the pace: young children, older travellers, anyone prone to seasickness, keen photographers, or a group mixing fishing and snorkelling. A couple on a standard route usually saves with a joined tour.

Can a longtail boat go to Koh Rok from Koh Lanta?

Sometimes, but sellers disagree and the answer depends on the day. Thai National Parks gives about 2 hours one way by longtail, against about 1 hour by speedboat, and does not recommend the longtail. Koh Rok is about 26 km from Koh Lanta Yai’s south, but roughly 48 km in a straight line from Saladan pier. Departure point, sea state and the boat itself decide it.

How long does it take to reach Koh Rok by boat?

About 1 hour each way by speedboat and about 2 hours by longtail, according to Thai National Parks (page as of June 2026). Both figures are approximate and fit a crossing of about 26 km from the south of Koh Lanta Yai. A swell, a headwind or a start from Saladan in the north adds time.

Do you pay national park fees on a private boat?

Yes. Park fees are charged per person, whichever boat you arrive on. As checked on 18 October 2026, Mu Ko Lanta National Park’s offshore zone (Koh Rok, Koh Haa, Koh Ngai) is listed at 400 THB per foreign adult, from the Department of National Parks fee table. Ask whether fees are inside your quote or paid on the day.

Is a longtail or a speedboat better if I get seasick?

Neither cures it; the route and the day matter more. A speedboat shortens the time at sea but can slam in a chop, while a longtail is slower and lower, with spray in a swell. Choose a short route on a calm day, sit in the middle of the boat as the NHS advises, watch the horizon and ask a pharmacist about tablets before you go.

What time is sunset for a Koh Lanta sunset boat trip?

Between about 18:00 and 18:40 in the dry season. Calculated sunset is about 18:03 in mid-November, 18:11 in mid-December, 18:26 in mid-January and about 18:36 from mid-February to mid-March. Civil twilight lasts about 20 minutes more, so a sunset trip usually comes back in the dusk. Ask what time you board and where you land.

Can we fish and snorkel on the same private boat trip?

Often yes, but the two may need different places. Thailand’s National Park Act 2019 bans taking wild animals and bringing tools for catching animals into a national park unless officials permit it, and the best snorkelling sites are inside parks. Tell us how many people want to fish and snorkel, and we will tell you what is possible on your date.

Is a private boat a good idea with a baby or toddler?

Often, because you can keep the day short, stop when a child needs to and return early. Check the practical points first: life jackets in your children’s sizes, shade on board, whether there is a toilet, and how long each crossing takes. Send us the children’s ages and we will tell you which trip and boat suit them.
