Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon: two different highlights
Choose Phi Phi when the island scenery itself is a reason to go. The sweep of sand at Maya Bay and the water between Pileh Lagoon’s cliffs are different experiences, brought together with snorkelling on the same outing. You can visit from Koh Lanta while keeping your hotel as your holiday base.
Both Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon are on Phi Phi Leh. That helps explain the day: you are exploring island coast and marine-park scenery by boat, with different activities at different stops. A beach visit, a lagoon view and a snorkel should each have their place in your expectations.

Maya Bay: go for the beach and the view
Maya Bay’s pale sand curves between steep limestone cliffs. It is the place many visitors recognise from photographs and the film The Beach. The pleasure of the stop is seeing that setting for yourself: walking on the sand, looking out at the bay and taking time for the view.
Swimming in Maya Bay is prohibited, so this is not the stop to picture yourself spending a long session in the sea. Beach access is managed, with boats using the back of the island and visitors walking through to the bay. Mention any difficulty with boarding, steps or walking when choosing the trip.
Maya Bay is a well-known attraction visited by travellers from several departure points. Expect to share it with other visitors; a private boat does not give private access to the beach. Access arrangements and time ashore follow the park’s rules, and seasonal closures can affect whether a beach visit is possible.
Pileh Lagoon and the time in the water
Pileh Lagoon brings a different perspective on Phi Phi Leh. Instead of an open beach view, the boat approaches a seawater inlet framed by high limestone walls. The enclosure and the green-blue water make the lagoon a highlight in its own right, rather than just a place to pass on the way to Maya Bay.
Lagoon access and how the boat visits depend on the water level, conditions and the selected itinerary. Seeing Pileh on a route does not by itself promise a particular swim, a separate longtail ride or an unlimited stay. Tell us if a specific lagoon activity is your main reason for going so we can discuss the proposed visit.
Snorkelling stops provide the opportunity to enjoy the sea below the surface elsewhere in the outing. Treat them as distinct from Maya Bay’s beach visit. You can enjoy the limestone views without snorkelling, while someone keen on water time should compare the number and balance of stops in the trip plan.
Make the day work for everyone coming
Start with your main priority: seeing Maya Bay, enjoying the lagoon scenery, taking photographs or snorkelling. If several people are coming, tell us who wants time in the sea and who mainly wants sightseeing. That makes it easier to choose the right balance than starting with the longest list of stops.
For children, include ages and swimming confidence. For anyone uneasy in the sea or with reduced mobility, describe what is comfortable: sitting aboard, getting on and off the boat, walking ashore or using a ladder after a swim. Those are different parts of the outing, and participation needs to suit the actual boat and stops.
We arrange shared and private boat services, with available formats depending on your route and date. A join tour has organised stop times alongside other travellers. If you want your own group together on one boat, discuss our private boat trips. Agree the plan beforehand; park access and sea conditions also apply to private outings.
For the crossing, compare seating, shade, boarding and the journey rather than choosing on boat type alone. Mention seasickness or discomfort with a lively ride before booking so comfort is part of the discussion.
Plan the day and pack for more than a beach stop
Bring swimwear for the water stops, a towel, a dry layer, a hat and sun protection suited to park rules. Wet-friendly footwear is useful for moving between the boat and shore, and a small dry bag or waterproof pouch helps protect a phone and other essentials. Keep your bag easy to carry when boarding and walking.
If Maya Bay is the reason for choosing Phi Phi, share your travel dates before settling on the outing. Seasonal beach closures and temporary access changes can affect that particular stop even when other parts of Phi Phi can be visited. Avoid building your plans around a fixed annual opening date without checking the arrangement for your stay.
Choose a day with room around it. Boat travel, shore access and the return to your Koh Lanta hotel all take time. Plan an onward ferry or airport journey separately unless the confirmed return arrangement leaves the time you need, and keep another possible tour date where your stay allows.
Choose Phi Phi when these are the sights you want
Phi Phi makes sense when Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon are high on your wish list and you want snorkelling alongside the scenery. It gives a different day from a trip chosen mainly for reef exploration: the famous beach and lagoon have their own place in the itinerary.
If your priority is a snorkelling-focused outing, compare the combined Koh Rok and Koh Haa tour. For a mixture of island beaches, snorkelling and the adventure of a water passage to Emerald Cave, look at the 4 Islands tour. Our Koh Lanta boat tours page brings the choices and boat formats together.
Arrange your Phi Phi tour from Koh Lanta
Send your preferred date, hotel, adults and children’s ages on WhatsApp, along with your main highlight and swimming experience. Mention boat-comfort or mobility needs and an alternative date if you have one. You can also meet our family at the shop in front of Rawi Warin Resort & Spa.
Your trip-specific quote confirms the route and stops, the proposed Maya Bay and Pileh visits, boat and booking format, departure and return timing, pickup or meeting point, total price and child pricing. It explains meals and drinking water, snorkel and flotation equipment, park fees and other separate charges, payment and booking terms, and what applies if weather or site access changes or cancels the trip. Review the complete arrangement before booking.

Phi Phi tour: your questions answered
Can we take a Phi Phi tour while staying on Koh Lanta?
Yes. We arrange a Phi Phi outing from Koh Lanta, so you can visit the island highlights while keeping your Koh Lanta hotel. This is a sightseeing and snorkelling trip; it is a different arrangement from a one-way transfer to stay overnight on Phi Phi.
Does the tour visit Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon?
Our Phi Phi route brings together Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and snorkelling stops. Maya Bay is the beach-and-scenery part, Pileh is the limestone lagoon setting, and water stops add snorkelling. The trip plan explains how each is visited, with access and conditions able to affect individual stops.
Can we swim or snorkel at Maya Bay?
No. Swimming in Maya Bay is prohibited. Enjoy the beach and the view, and plan to get into the water at the outing’s separate snorkelling stops. This distinction matters if your picture of a Phi Phi day comes from older photographs of people swimming in the bay.
Do we walk to Maya Bay after leaving the boat?
The managed approach uses the back of Phi Phi Leh, followed by a walk through to the beach. It is not a boat landing directly onto Maya Bay’s sand. Tell us if steps, walking or getting on and off a boat are difficult so the access involved can be considered before booking.
Is a swim in Pileh Lagoon guaranteed?
The lagoon visit and a swim are different details. Water level, access, the proposed activity and conditions shape what happens at Pileh. If swimming there or taking a particular type of boat into the lagoon is essential to you, make that the starting point of your enquiry rather than assuming it from the destination name.
Is Phi Phi a good choice for non-swimmers or families?
There is plenty of scenery to enjoy above the water, including Maya Bay and the limestone coast. You still need to consider the crossing, boarding and shore access, plus what happens during snorkelling stops for anyone staying out of the water. Share children’s ages, swimming confidence and any mobility needs so the actual arrangement can be considered for everyone.
Should we choose Phi Phi or Koh Rok and Koh Haa?
Choose Phi Phi if Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon are the particular sights you want, with snorkelling alongside them. Choose Koh Rok and Koh Haa if the main aim is a snorkelling day in reef and island settings. The better choice follows what you want to spend the day doing rather than which island name is most famous.
Can a private boat avoid the crowds at Maya Bay?
A private boat keeps your own party together and lets you discuss a plan before booking, but Maya Bay remains a shared, managed park attraction. Its access rules and other visitors still apply. If photography or a particular pace matters, explain that when comparing the available arrangement; a crowd-free beach cannot be promised.
How much is a Phi Phi tour, and are pickup and park fees included?
Send your date, hotel and party details for the proposed trip and total price. Read the transport and park charges alongside the boat, stops and equipment when comparing options. The booking section above sets out the complete quote, including separate costs and terms, so you can decide on the actual outing.
Can we visit Phi Phi if Maya Bay is closed?
Maya Bay access and the availability of a wider Phi Phi outing are separate questions. Other parts of the area may be accessible, but the route still depends on conditions and what is offered for your date. If Maya Bay is your main reason for going, say so before accepting an alternative plan and leave room for another possible day.
