Three neighbouring west-coast beaches

Khlong Toab, Khlong Nin or Khlong Khong for your stay?

Pick Khlong Nin (Klong Nin) for the gentlest sandy swimming, Khlong Khong (Klong Khong) for sunsets, simple bungalows and livelier evenings, and Khlong Toab (Klong Toab) for quiet between the two. All three sit within about 5 km of each other on Koh Lanta’s west coast, roughly 15 to 25 minutes by road from Saladan pier.

Three west-coast neighbourhoods sit side by side in the middle of Koh Lanta Yai, all strung along Highway 4245. From north to south they are Khlong Khong (Klong Khong), Khlong Toab (Klong Toab, also written Klong Tob) and Khlong Nin (Klong Nin). Our family shop is in the middle one, on Highway 4245 in front of Rawi Warin Resort & Spa. The beach notes below come from dated surveys and guides rather than our own swim tests, and shores here change with tide, season and erosion.

Our shop to Khlong Khong beach
about 2.6 km north
Our shop to Khlong Nin beach
about 1.5 km south
Khlong Khong to Khlong Nin
about 5 km by road
Our shop to Saladan pier
about 13 km by road

Where the three areas are, in the right order

Khlong Toab is between the other two, not south of Khlong Nin as some pages suggest. OpenStreetMap shows two small Khlong Toab beaches, Hat Khlong Tob Yai about 0.8 km north-west of our shop and Hat Khlong Tob Noi about 0.3 km south-west, near Rawi Warin Resort & Spa. Wikivoyage describes that resort sitting in the foothills above Khlong Toab bay. The Khlong Khong beach marker is about 2.6 km north in a straight line, and the Khlong Nin beach marker about 1.5 km south.

Each beach is long. Thailand Beaches measured Khlong Khong at about 2.6 km and Khlong Nin at about 2.4 km, so the nearest sand of each is closer to Khlong Toab than the markers suggest. North of Khlong Khong comes Long Beach (Phra Ae), then Khlong Dao and Saladan. South of Khlong Nin the road continues to Kantiang Bay and the national park.

Khlong Nin vs Khlong Khong (Klong Nin vs Klong Khong) side by side

Choose by what you will do most: swim, watch sunsets, or sleep in peace. This summary draws on Thailand Beaches (Khlong Toab October 2024, the others June 2025), Wikivoyage and a 2022 travel blog.

What you get Khlong Khong Khlong Toab Khlong Nin
Sand Coarse, mixed with rocks and shells Little sand on one half, pockets elsewhere Soft, medium-grain
Low tide Rock shelf exposed Wide, rocky flats Sea retreats 50–70 m
Swimming Near high tide, sandier spots only In front of some hotels Gradual, good for children
Evenings Beach bars, live music some nights Quiet, mostly hotel-based Beach cafés, sunset drinks
Best for Budget stays, sunsets, social travellers Quiet, couples, central base Families, easy beach days

Khlong Khong beach for sunsets and a relaxed scene

Khlong Khong suits travellers who care more about atmosphere than swimming. Wikivoyage describes a rocky reef along the shore, difficult for swimming but good for sunsets, with fishing boats at the south end. The June 2025 survey found coarse yellow sand, rocks underfoot at low tide and deeper water only about 40 metres out. It called the mood bohemian, with bungalow resorts and bamboo cafés along the front. A 2022 blog found the middle busiest and the southern end quieter, near a river mouth.

Khlong Toab beach, the quiet stretch around our shop

Khlong Toab is the quietest of the three and the least beach-focused. The October 2024 survey found part of the shore lined with a concrete sea wall and little sand. Sandy swimming spots were mainly in front of certain hotels, and at low tide the bay opened into wide, rocky flats. The 2022 blog found no sand to lie on where it stopped, and an empty beach. If you stay here, plan on short rides to Khlong Nin or Khlong Khong for longer beach days.

Khlong Nin beach for swimming and families

Khlong Nin is the easiest of the three for a classic beach day. The June 2025 survey describes soft sand and a sea floor that deepens very gradually, with calm conditions that suit small children. At low tide the water pulls back 50 to 70 metres, and at high tide the beach narrows to about 5 metres. Beach cafés offer loungers when you order, and a 7-Eleven stands at one end. Wikivoyage notes a stream dividing the beach and fewer rocks on the northern part.

Distances to Saladan pier, Long Beach, Old Town and the park

Khlong Khong is the most northerly and Khlong Nin the most southerly, so the choice shifts which end of the island is closer. These figures come from the public OSRM route planner, run on 18 October 2026 between points on the main road at each area, and rounded. They are approximate road distances and free-flowing driving times, so allow extra for rain, traffic and stops.

From each area to Khlong Khong Khlong Toab (our shop) Khlong Nin
Saladan pier 9 km, 15 min 13 km, 20 min 14 km, 25 min
Long Beach (Phra Ae) 4 km, 5 min 7 km, 10 min 9 km, 15 min
Lanta Old Town 10 km, 20 min 10 km, 15 min 10 km, 15 min
Kantiang Bay 10 km, 25 min 7 km, 20 min 5 km, 15 min
National park headquarters 16 km, 35 min 13 km, 30 min 11 km, 25 min

Old Town, on the east coast, is roughly the same distance from all three, because roads cross the island from this part of the coast. For a day at the lighthouse, see visiting Koh Lanta’s lighthouse and national park.

Walking, roadside safety and getting rides

You can walk between parts of each area, but treat Highway 4245 with care. It is the one coast road linking all three, so hotel guests, scooters and pickups share it. The 2024 survey found a seafront promenade along part of Khlong Toab, and the 2022 blog found the pavement there in poor shape. The UK Foreign Office notes that Thailand has a high number of road accidents, particularly involving motorcycles.

After dark, carry a torch or phone light and wear something pale. Allow time when crossing, because traffic can be faster than it looks. For dinner at another beach, a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride avoids walking an unlit road home. Book both directions together if you want a set return time.

If you are a confident, licensed rider, a scooter gives you everyday independence. Our scooter rental is at the shop on Highway 4245, between Khlong Khong and Khlong Nin. If you would rather not ride, getting around Koh Lanta without a scooter compares the alternatives.

Long stays and the rainy season on this coast

For a long stay, think about laundry, rides and the sea in the wet months. We offer laundry at the shop (washing, drying, ironing, fold and pack), and the same counter can arrange your next taxi or tour. We are open daily from 6 am to 9 pm.

The UK Foreign Office gives the rainy season as generally May to October. It warns that people have drowned in strong riptides, especially in the monsoon, and says to follow red flags. On 17 May 2026 the Thai Meteorological Department warned of waves of 2–3 metres in the upper Andaman Sea and about 2 metres further south. In September 2018 Krabi raised red flags on beaches including Koh Lanta after heavy rain, as Nation Thailand reported.

Wikivoyage notes that many places used to close in the low season but more now stay open year round, often at lower prices. Ask your hotel whether its restaurant and beach area will be open on your dates. For more, see what stays open on Koh Lanta during the rainy season.

Before you book a room in this stretch

Decide on swimming first, then evenings, then transport. Families who want easy sea days lean towards Khlong Nin. Budget travellers and sunset lovers lean towards Khlong Khong. Light sleepers who will ride or taxi to the beach lean towards Khlong Toab.

Send us your hotel name, dates and arrival time, and we’ll tell you what we can arrange and how to reach our shop from your door.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim at Klong Nin beach?

Yes, around high tide. A June 2025 beach survey describes soft sand and water that deepens very gradually, which suits children. At low tide the sea pulls back about 50 to 70 metres and most people only reach knee or waist depth. Check a tide table, and stay out when red flags are up.

Is Klong Khong beach good for swimming?

Not especially. Wikivoyage and a June 2025 beach survey both describe a rocky shelf along the shore, so at low tide you cross rocks to reach the water. Swimming works best near high tide on the sandier stretches. People stay at Khlong Khong for the sunsets and relaxed bungalow scene rather than the swimming.

Where is Klong Toab on Koh Lanta?

Khlong Toab (Klong Toab, also spelled Klong Tob) lies on the west coast between Khlong Khong to the north and Khlong Nin to the south, along Highway 4245. Some pages put it south of Khlong Nin, but OpenStreetMap places its two beaches north of Khlong Nin. Our shop is there, in front of Rawi Warin Resort & Spa.

Which part of Koh Lanta is best to stay in?

It depends on what you want. Saladan, Khlong Dao and Long Beach in the north are busiest and closest to the pier. Khlong Khong suits budget travellers and sunset lovers, Khlong Nin suits families who want easy swimming, and the south around Kantiang and the national park is quieter and further from the pier.

Is Klong Nin or Klong Khong better for families?

Khlong Nin is usually the better family base. Recent beach surveys describe gradual, sandy entry at Khlong Nin and rocks underfoot at low tide along much of Khlong Khong. Check your hotel’s own stretch of beach, because both shores change with tide, season and erosion.

How far is Klong Nin from Saladan pier?

About 14 km by road, roughly 25 minutes by car on the OSRM route planner, which does not allow for traffic, rain or stops. Khlong Toab is about 13 km (around 20 minutes) and Khlong Khong about 9 km (around 15 minutes). Allow extra time when you have a ferry to catch.

Is Klong Khong a party beach?

Not in the full-moon-party sense. Guides describe a relaxed, bohemian scene with beach bars, bamboo cafés and live music on some evenings, livelier than Khlong Toab or Khlong Nin. Venues change from season to season, so check recent listings before you book for nightlife.

Is Klong Toab a quiet beach on Koh Lanta?

Yes, it is one of the quieter stretches of the central west coast. A 2024 survey found little sand along one half, with sandy pockets in front of some hotels, and a 2022 travel blog found it empty. It suits people who want calm and plan to visit other beaches for swimming.
