Boat or car, door to door
Ao Nang to Koh Lanta by ferry or road?
From Ao Nang to Koh Lanta, the road via the Ban Hua Hin car ferry works every day of the year and takes you to your hotel door, in roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The passenger boat takes about 1.5 hours at sea but lands only at Saladan in the north, and most boats run from November to April.

Ao Nang and Koh Lanta are both in Krabi province, but there is no single obvious way between them. You can go by sea to Saladan pier or by road over the car ferry. The right choice depends mostly on the month, your luggage and where on Lanta you are staying.

Ferry or road from Ao Nang to Koh Lanta, side by side
If you are staying near Saladan or Khlong Dao and travelling light between November and April, the boat is pleasant and not much slower. For anywhere further south, in the low season, or with children and suitcases, the road is usually simpler.
| Passenger boat | Private car | Shared minivan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door to door, Khlong Toab | about 2 hr 45 min–3 hr | about 2.5–3.5 hr | about 3 hr or more |

| Best for | light packers staying north | families, bags, low season | solo budget travel |
Boat times combine the operator’s 1 hour 30 minute crossing with check-in and the road from Saladan. Car times come from the public OSRM router, which gives about 2 hours 25 minutes to Khlong Toab (Klong Toab) before any queue at the car ferry. Minivan times are reported by secondary travel sources and grow with each extra pickup. All of these are approximate.
When the Ao Nang to Koh Lanta ferry runs
One speedboat is listed all year; the others are seasonal. On 18 October 2026, Bundhaya Speed Boat’s own route list showed Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara) to Koh Lanta (Saladan) as “All year”, about 1 hour 30 minutes, from 1,250 THB per person.
Booking sites add the high-season boats. Visit Thailand Today, drawing on live 12Go listings, shows the Ao Nang Princess ferry from 15 November and Andaman Wave Master’s speedboat from November to April. Direct Ferries showed only Bundhaya’s 10:10 departure for 12 to 25 October 2026. December listings show more departures, including 13:00 and 14:40. These are secondary sources, so treat the dates as expected rather than confirmed.
- Jan Several boats
- Feb Several boats
- Mar Several boats
- Apr Several boats
- May Fewer boats
- Jun One boat
- Jul One boat
- Aug One boat
- Sep One boat
- Oct One boat
- Nov More boats start
- Dec Several boats
June to October: the one boat listed is Bundhaya Speed Boat’s all-year speedboat (operator’s route list). Other boats from booking-site listings (secondary), checked 18 October 2026. Every sailing depends on the weather and can be cancelled on the day.
The boat journey from Ao Nang, step by step
The boat itself is the short part. The time goes on getting to the pier, waiting, and getting from Saladan to your hotel.
- Hotel to Nopparat Thara pier About 3.5 km from central Ao Nang beach. Some tickets are sold with a hotel pickup, so check yours. about 10–15 min
- Check in at the pier Andaman Wave Master’s terms ask passengers to arrive no later than 30 minutes before departure. about 30 min
- Crossing to Saladan Listed at about 1 hour 30 minutes; booking sites range from 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 50 minutes. about 1 hr 30 min
- Off the boat with your bags Saladan pier is in the north of the island, beside the village. allow 10–15 min
- Saladan pier to your hotel About 12.6 km to Khlong Toab, more to Khlong Nin or the south. about 20 min to Khlong Toab
Luggage rules vary by boat. Andaman Wave Master’s published terms include one suitcase up to 18 inches and one hand bag per person on its speedboats, with extra pieces charged, and up to 25 inches on its ferries. Speedboats bounce in any swell, which matters if anyone in your group gets seasick.
Ao Nang to Koh Lanta by car and the car ferry
The road route runs every day, in every season, and ends at your hotel. It is about 90 km from Ao Nang to Ban Hua Hin pier (in Krabi, not Hua Hin town), roughly 1 hour 30 minutes of driving in the OSRM model. One vehicle ferry crosses to Koh Lanta Noi, then a bridge takes you onto Koh Lanta Yai near Saladan.
The variable is the ferry queue. Pattaya Mail reports that the car ferries cause delays at peak times and holidays, which is one reason a mainland bridge is now under contract, with opening expected in 2029. The article on what to expect at Koh Lanta’s car ferry covers the pier, the queue and the crossing in detail.
A private car leaves when you want and keeps your group and bags together. A shared minivan costs less per person but stops for other passengers. Secondary sources report about 3 hours from Ao Nang, with vans running roughly 07:00 to 17:30.
Ao Nang to Koh Lanta in low season
From May to October, the road is the dependable option. That is the southwest monsoon season, when the Thai Meteorological Department regularly issues strong wind-wave advisories for the Andaman Sea. Its advisory of 31 May 2026 described waves of about 2 metres from Krabi southwards. In July 2026 it forecast 2 to 3 metres in the lower Andaman Sea and told small boats to stay ashore.
In those months only one speedboat is listed, usually with one morning departure. If it is cancelled, you lose the day unless you switch to the road. Booking a road transfer from the start avoids that risk.
Which way suits your trip
Decide on four things: the date, where you are staying, your bags and your group.
Where you are staying on Lanta
The boat lands at Saladan, so it suits hotels in Saladan, Khlong Dao and Long Beach. For Khlong Toab, Khlong Nin or the south, the onward ride narrows the time gap with a car.
Luggage, children and seasickness
Large suitcases, pushchairs and car seats are easier in a car than on a speedboat, where bags are limited and handled by the crew. Anyone prone to seasickness will usually prefer the road, especially outside December to April.
Group size and cost
The boat is priced per seat and a private car per vehicle. For two people the boat or a minivan usually costs less. For a family of four or more, compare the total, including the taxi from Saladan pier.
From Krabi Town or Khlong Muang (Klong Muang)
The same choice applies, with different starting points. From Krabi Town, the road to Ban Hua Hin pier is about 78 km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes in the OSRM model. Booking sites list high-season boats from Klong Jilad pier in town. Krabi Town hotels and the bus terminal also have minivans to Lanta, according to secondary sources.
Khlong Muang has no boats of its own to Lanta. The nearest departures are at Nopparat Thara pier, about 7 km and 13 minutes away. By road it is about 96 km to Ban Hua Hin pier. If you are starting in Krabi Town or Khlong Muang, message us and we will tell you what we can arrange.
What to send us before you travel
We arrange private transfers between Ao Nang and Koh Lanta in both directions, and pickups at Saladan pier if you come by boat. For a quote on the Ao Nang to Koh Lanta transfer, send your travel date, hotel name, number of passengers and suitcases, and any children’s ages.
Arriving by boat? Send the boat’s arrival time and your hotel, and we can arrange a taxi from Saladan pier. Flying in instead of starting in Ao Nang? Read Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta from arrivals to your hotel, or see whether a late flight still reaches the island.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Ao Nang to Koh Lanta?
Allow roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours door to door either way. The speedboat is listed at about 1 hour 30 minutes at sea, plus pier check-in and the ride from Saladan to your hotel. By road it is about 113 km to Khlong Toab, around 2 hours 25 minutes in a routing model before any car ferry queue.
Is there a ferry from Ao Nang to Koh Lanta in the low season?
Usually one. On 18 October 2026, Bundhaya Speed Boat listed its Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara) to Koh Lanta speedboat as running all year, and booking sites showed a single 10:10 departure in October. Other boats are listed for the high season only. Any sailing can be cancelled in rough weather.
Which pier does the boat from Ao Nang leave from?
Nopparat Thara pier, about 3.5 km west of central Ao Nang beach, which operators list as Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara). Some boats also call at Railay East, and in the high season some start from Klong Jilad pier in Krabi Town. Check the pier printed on your ticket.
Where does the Ao Nang boat arrive on Koh Lanta?
At Saladan pier, on the northern tip of Koh Lanta Yai. From there it is about 12.6 km by road to Khlong Toab and further to Khlong Nin or the south, so most people need a taxi or a pre-arranged pickup at the pier.
Can I take a big suitcase on the speedboat to Koh Lanta?
Check with your operator first. Andaman Wave Master’s published terms, for example, include one suitcase up to 18 inches plus one hand bag per person on its speedboats, with extra pieces charged. Bundhaya did not publish luggage limits we could find on 18 October 2026.
Is the boat cheaper than a private car from Ao Nang?
For one or two people the boat or a shared minivan usually costs less, because you pay per seat. A private car is priced per vehicle, so the cost per person falls as your group grows. Add the Saladan pier to hotel ride when you compare the boat.
Does the boat from Koh Lanta back to Ao Nang run all year too?
Not quite, as listed. On 18 October 2026, Bundhaya showed its Koh Lanta to Ao Nang speedboat as seasonal, with windows covering 22 July to 30 September and 15 October to 20 May. Ask the operator about late May to mid-July and early October.
Is there a bridge from the mainland to Koh Lanta yet?
No. Cars still cross on the vehicle ferry from Ban Hua Hin pier to Koh Lanta Noi. The contract for a mainland bridge was signed on 31 August 2026, with opening expected in 2029. Until then, the car ferry is the only road link.
