Most guides to this route stop at “allow two to three hours”. This one breaks the journey into its six real stages, shows how much your choice of beach changes the total, and compares the four usual ways to make the trip. Distances and drive times come from OpenStreetMap routing and are approximate; ferry hours come from the operator. Everything was checked on 18 October 2026.

How to get from Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta, stage by stage

You drive almost the whole way. Koh Lanta has no airport, and no boat leaves from Krabi Airport (code KBV), so every road option follows the same line: mainland highway, one car ferry, a bridge, then the island road south.

  1. Arrivals hall Collect your bags. On an international flight you pass immigration before the baggage hall and customs after it, and immigration is the slowest part at busy times. Transport counters and pre-booked drivers wait in the arrivals area. allow 20 to 45 min
  2. Drive to Ban Hua Hin pier About 36 km south-east, mostly on Highway 4, then about 27 km south on Route 4206 to the pier at Ban Hua Hin (in Krabi province, not Hua Hin town). about 1 hr
  3. Queue and ticket at the pier Vehicles line up on the approach road and the crossing is paid at the pier. On a quiet day you drive straight on; at peak times this is where the hours go. a few minutes to several hours
  4. Car ferry to Khlong Mak pier About 1.6 km across the channel to Khlong Mak on Koh Lanta Noi. Boats leave about every 20 minutes. about 15 min
  5. Across Lanta Noi and the Siri Lanta bridge About 10 km over Koh Lanta Noi and the 650-metre bridge to Saladan, at the north tip of Koh Lanta Yai. about 15 to 20 min
  6. Drive to your beach South along Highway 4245 on the west coast. Saladan is the end of the line for some; the southern bays take up to 40 minutes more. 0 to 40 min

Add those up on a clear day and you reach the north of the island about 2 hours after touching down, and the far south in about 3. That matches the 2 to 3 hours we suggest on our Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta transfer page.

Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta, how long to each beach

Where you stay matters more than most people expect. On Koh Lanta Yai, the road gets narrower and hillier south of Khlong Nin (Klong Nin).

Beach area Road distance from the airport Drive incl. ferry, no queue Allow from landing
Saladan, Khlong Dao (Klong Dao) about 76–77 km about 1 hr 40 min about 2 to 2.5 hours
Khlong Toab, Khlong Nin about 87–89 km about 2 hr about 2.5 hours
Kantiang, Khlong Jak (Klong Jak) about 94–97 km about 2 hr 20 min about 3 hours

The drive times are OpenStreetMap routing estimates from 18 October 2026, with about 19 minutes for the ferry. “Allow from landing” adds a typical arrivals wait and a short queue. For reference, our shop in Khlong Toab, on Highway 4245 in front of Rawi Warin Resort & Spa, is about 87 km by road from the terminal.

Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta by car, minivan or taxi

All four options use the same road and the same ferry, so the differences are about door-to-door convenience, waiting and luggage rather than speed.

Option What it is Typical time Best for Watch out for
Private transfer, booked ahead A car or van for your group only, airport to hotel 2 to 3 hours Families, groups, lots of luggage, tired arrivals Book with your flight number; ask what the quote covers
Shared minivan A seat in a van that drops at several hotels 2 to 2.5 hours plus stops Solo travellers and couples with light bags Limited luggage space, waiting to fill, roughly 08:00 to 20:30 only
Airport taxi counter A private car booked on arrival 2 to 3 hours Arrivals with no booking Confirm the price, the ferry and your exact hotel before you set off
Rental car from the airport You drive and queue yourself about 2 hours plus the queue Travellers who want a car all trip Driving permit, left-hand traffic, ferry allowed in the contract

Shared minivan

A travel directory updated on 3 October 2026 lists airport vans from about 08:00 to the last departures around 20:30, and sellers quote about 2 to 2.5 hours to your hotel. Expect several hotel stops on the way south, so the last drop-off can take noticeably longer.

Driving a rental car

The car rides on the ferry and you queue with it. UK travel advice says UK drivers need the 1968 International Driving Permit alongside their licence, and Thailand drives on the left. If you only want a car for island days, picking one up on the island avoids driving the mainland leg after a flight; see our Koh Lanta car rental.

The car ferry and the queue at Ban Hua Hin pier

The crossing is short; the wait before it is the part nobody can predict. Songserm Tran Service, which runs the Ban Hua Hin to Ban Khlong Mak route, lists boats every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 22:00 (as listed on 18 October 2026). Each carries up to 45 cars and 120 passengers, and private charter boats run after hours. Wikivoyage still gives 07:00 as the start, so use the operator’s hours and check on the day.

Queues build at the start of high season, through December and January, on Thai long weekends and on busy afternoons. Khaosod English reported hours-long waits and long vehicle lines in both directions in early November 2025. Practical steps:

  • Eat, use the toilet and buy water at the airport before you set off.
  • Keep your phone charged and tell your hotel your expected arrival window.
  • On a peak date, treat 3 hours as the minimum, not the maximum.

A mainland bridge to Koh Lanta Noi is under contract and expected to open in 2029, according to Thai PBS World on 8 September 2026. Until then, every vehicle uses this ferry. The article on what to expect at Koh Lanta’s car ferry covers the pier, tickets and crossing in detail.

Is there a Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta ferry?

Not directly. The only boat on the normal airport route is the car ferry above, and your vehicle drives onto it. Passenger boats to Saladan pier leave from Krabi Town’s Khlong Jilad pier and from Ao Nang, mainly in high season; booking sites show only occasional sailings from June to September. Reaching those piers means a taxi ride and a fixed departure time, so for most airport arrivals the road is simpler. Our Ao Nang to Koh Lanta comparison weighs the boat against the road.

Landing late or flying out early

The scheduled ferry stops at 22:00 and shared vans end around 20:30, so an evening landing changes the plan. Our article on reaching Koh Lanta after a late flight explains the options. For an early departure, work back from your flight time: the first scheduled crossing is 06:00, and the queue can be long in the other direction too.

What to have ready before you land

Whichever option you choose, a driver or counter needs the same details. Have them in one message on your phone:

  • Flight number, date and scheduled landing time.
  • Your hotel’s name exactly as booked, plus the beach area or a map pin.
  • Number of adults and children, with children’s ages.
  • Number of suitcases and anything bulky, such as a pushchair or golf bag.
  • A phone that works on arrival, and some Thai baht for snacks and water.

To have the whole journey arranged, send us your flight number, landing time, hotel and luggage on our Krabi Airport transfer page, and we’ll tell you what’s possible for your arrival. Moving on from Ao Nang or between hotels instead? See our Koh Lanta transfers.
